Oh 1992, you are too pure for this world. What’s also hard to believe is that when Disney’s Aladdin was released in cinemas, having a celebrity voice actor was considered headline news(ish), and completely irrelevant pop culture references were also considered amusing and ground-breaking. There are many variations of the story (thanks in part to its many pantomime incarnations), but what isn’t as well known is that Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp may have been penned by an 18th Century French translator named Antoine Gallard, rather than having come from Indian, Arab or Persian folklore. ![]() ![]() It’s the tale of a peasant boy who finds a magical oil lamp with a genie inside, who grants him pretty much anything he wishes. Aladdin is based on one of the best known stories from the One Thousand and One Nights or Arabian Nights collection.
